Hypomania
Hypomania is a less severe form of
mania, which is not usually followed by a Major
Depressive episode. Symptoms may include increased
energy, grandiose (absurd
exaggeration) thoughts decreased need for sleep,
overindulgence in inappropriate and risky
behaviors such as sexual encounters and
unnecessary spending. Mood is elevated. The
individual will experience irritability and
racing thoughts.
Some people have very few manic-depressive
episodes, with years of stability in between
them. They may experience no more than a couple
of episodes in their whole lifetime. Others have
many more frequent cycles – 'rapid cycling'
means having four or more episodes a year. About
one per cent of the general population is
diagnosed with manic depression – a roughly
equal number of men and women – usually in their
20s or 30s (although some teenagers are
affected). They are often intelligent and
creative people.
