Cocaine
Beware of Cocaine! It is an
extremely addictive substance. There are three
ways to ingest the drug of Cocaine: sniffing or
snorting, smoking, or injecting with a needle.
If the needle is the preferred choice, there is
a risk of acquiring the HIV virus.
When people snort cocaine,
the cocaine powder is inhaled through the nose
where it is absorbed into the bloodstream.
Smoking involves inhaling the vapor or smoke of
cocaine into the lungs where absorption into the
bloodstream is very rapid. The choice of smoking
cocaine can lead to more rapid abuse and
compulsion.
Physical effects of the drug
Cocaine use include constricted peripheral
vessels, dilated pupils, increased temperature,
heart rate, and blood pressure. The immediate
effects include hyper-stimulation, reduced
fatigue, and mental clarity, depending on how
the drug is ingested. The high from snorting may
last 15 to 30 minutes, while the high from
smoking may only last 5 to 10 minutes.
Feelings associated with the
high include restlessness, irritability, and
anxiety. Sudden death can occur on the first use
of cocaine or thereafter. High doses can cause
paranoia. When addicted cocaine users suddenly
stop using the drug depression can occur.
